Welcome to True Ancient Horror
I’m Barry, an archaeologist based in the misty, haunting landscapes of Scotland — a land where the past never truly rests. My work has taken me deep into ruins, burial sites, and the silent stones that still seem to whisper their secrets. What I’ve discovered is that the oldest stories of all — myths, rituals, curses — are often the most terrifying.
What You Will Experience at True Ancient Horror
True Ancient Horror is where I bring those shadows to light. You’ll find tales drawn from history, legend, and archaeology itself — stories that prove horror isn’t just fiction. It’s carved into our past.
Right now, there are only a few articles, the first flickers of the torch. But more are coming — a growing collection of unearthed nightmares that time hoped we would forget.
So step inside. Read what’s here. And remember: in places like Scotland, the ground beneath your feet has seen more than it dares to tell.
BUT, let’s not limit ourselves, let’s travel the globe together and unearth stories that will stay with you forever.
The Writing Team

Barry Gray
Archaeologist, researcher, and founder of Ancient Horrors. Educated at the University of Edinburgh, Barry combined Archaeology with the Study of Religion — a rare academic pairing that allows him to interpret ancient sites not only through material evidence, but through the belief systems that shaped them. He manages the site’s historical research and fact-checking, crafting stories where ritual, mortality, and myth converge. His work bridges the precision of archaeology with the art of narrative, making him one of the few archaeologist–writers with this unique dual lens.

Julianna Ainsleigh
Co-writer and creative partner at Ancient Horrors. With a background in Clinical Psychology and Sociology, Julianna brings a deep understanding of human fear, ritual, and obsession to the project. Her writing explores the psychology of what terrifies us — the ancient instincts that still twitch beneath civilisation’s surface. Together with Barry, she transforms archaeological record into haunting narrative, where fact meets the uncanny.
Available for:
- Writing collaborations and commissioned features
- Guest articles and essays
- Narrative consulting — helping authors, filmmakers, or podcasters shape storylines, tone, and emotional impact so historical or psychological material feels authentic and engaging.
